Seemingly signaled as a success with the recent operating license renewal in the People’s Republic of China, it would appear as if China has officially given Google the green light to continue operating as-is in the Asian country.
According to a senior state official, China is satisfied with Google China’s homepage, which features a link to Google’s Hong Kong homepage that does not filter results. Of course, China’s managed to block Google Hong Kong, so the link may end up dead for many.
It’s a win-win situation. China is preventing users from accessing sensitive material, whereas Google is sticking to its promise of exploiting any possibility to allow users to search the web freely.
That said, we expect everything to be smooth sailing from this point — or at least until Google decides their current situation isn’t quite enough to meet their standards.
