One of the more talked about features of the upcoming iOS 4.1 update soon coming out would be the addition of HDR Photos for iPhone 4 users. Standing for “high dynamic range”, HDR photos essentially snap three images in super-fast succession. One of these images is underexposed, another at normal exposure, and the last being overexposed. Combined, the three images produce a perfectly exposed image, allowing for the viewing of details that perhaps would have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Sadly, Apple has chosen to make the feature available to iPhone 4 users only — a direct result of the new 5-megapixel on-board camera.
But that isn’t the end for other iPhones. Blog RedmondPie notes that a new app will soon make its debut on Cydia which will allow iPhone 3G and 3GS owners to benefit with HDR photos on their own devices.
If you haven’t already caught on with my reference to Cydia, you device needs to be jailbroken in order for this to work.
At the helm of the project is Will Strafach, who tweeted the following on Twitter:
“Made a Cydia tweak to allow HDR photos on 4.1 for the iPhone 3G and 3G[s].”
It’s coming soon, so be sure to stick around for more information. We’ll post once we learn more.
