Opera has rolled out the latest update for their Opera Mini mobile browser. The update brings the version up to 5.1, so its basically a smaller point release. That said, those who are using Opera Mini 5.1 may not see any major changes. Of course, that is not to say nothing was changed. Read on for some details on that, as well as some impressive usage stats that Opera has decided to share.
Opera Milestone: The Opera Mini team has hit a new milestone – they officially support more than 3000 different devices!
Lets begin with what was changed and/or added. In short, this was about performance, and to be a little more specific, it was about performance on phones with limited memory. According to the change log, Opera Mini 5.1 now has a “new optimized browser skin allowing for more pages to be open at the same time, more rapid scrolling through pages, and overall improved browsing performance.”
As for who should be looking to upgrade. Opera has stated that those on smartphones and higher-end devices should not consider this a critical update. On the other hand, Nokia S40 users on the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, Nokia 6300 and Nokia 2700 as well as the Sony Ericsson K550i and Sony Ericsson W810i will want to grab Opera Mini 5.1 sooner than later.
Additionally, those who have been getting out-of-memory issues should see some improvements.
Moving on, lets mention some of the numbers that Opera choose to share. In terms of using the browser, its said that Opera Mini “compresses data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the phone.” In other words, this means you should see more speed and faster load times. Its also a perk for those on a data plan with limits.
Plus, it was noted that Opera Mini now has 61 million users worldwide and offers support for over 3,000 devices.
