One of the biggest challenge to web designers is finding ways to place a lot of information on a page without losing usability. Tabbed content is a great way to handle this issue and has been widely used on blogs recently. Today we’re going to build a simple little tabbed information box in HTML, then make it function using some simple Javascript, and then finally we’ll achieve the same thing using the jQuery library. |

4. Animated Navigation with CSS & jQuery
|
As I was checking out some flash sites for inspiration, I ran across a couple websites that had some nice navigation effects. I’m not a huge fan of wildly animated navs, but these had simple and elegant roll over effects that I liked. I decided to imitate the effect with CSS and jQuery, and would like to share this technique today. |

11. jQuery Menu: Dropdown, iPod Drilldown, and Flyout styles with ARIA Support and ThemeRoller Ready
|
We got lots of fantastic feedback on our earlier iPod-style menu, and decided to upgrade it for jQuery 1.3. In the process of refining the script, we morphed it into more of a menu system, which can be used to create a simple dropdown menu for a single list of options, a flyout menu for a smaller hierarchical list of options where child menus are displayed next to the parent menu on mouseover, and two variations on the iPod style, one with a back button and another with a linked breadcrumb to let users easily traverse back up the hierarchy. |

14. Chrome CSS Drop Down Menu
|
We decided to create this script when we needed a compact CSS drop down menu for a project. Chrome Menu is a CSS and JavaScript hybrid drop down menu. It’s easy to configure and search engine friendly. The main menu bar consist of a CSS list, while the drop down menus are simply regular DIV tags on page. Thanks to JavaScript, the menu supports subtle but important effects such as delay before menu disappearance, and repositioning of the menu if too close to any one of the four corners of the window. The entire menu, including images and external files, is extremely compact. Thanks to CSS, the menu can be styled with a different “theme” easily, just by modifying a few CSS attributes and changing a couple of images’ colors. Some highlights of this menu |

18. Simple jQuery Dropdowns

There are lots of dropdown menus already out there. I’m not really trying to reinvent the wheel here, but I wanted to try to do something slightly different by making them as dead simple as possible. Very stripped down code and minimal styling, yet still have all the functionality typically needed. Here are the features:
- Cross-browser compatible (even IE 6)
- Multi-level and retains “trail”
- Very minimal styling (easy to adapt)
- Very minimal JavaScript (short bit of jQuery)

22. A Different Top Navigation
|
When designing a new site, web designers usually face the age-old question: vertical or horizontal navigation? There are pros and cons to both solutions. One example being horizontal navigation limits the number of links you can have due to a limited page width. This is usually solved by including a drop down system. However, if you are attempting to make your particular site stand out, you might consider thinking outside the “norm”. |

|
The design of Digg is full of smart ideas. The site identity is strong but doesn’t take up too much valuable vertical space. Navigation is compacted with the use of simple drop-down menus. Important things like subscribing, searching and account information are right up top where you would expect them to be. It’s fluid width, but it doesn’t shrink too far or grow too big. |
