Google just introduced today at its Mobile Press Event in San Francisco, California a new feature for the Android platform named “Voice Actions for Android.” As the name suggests, the product allows users to perform pretty much any task by just using different voice commands.
The feature was demoed on stage by Google Product Management Director for Mobile Huge Barra. Voice Actions for Mobile allows users to easily sent text messages, call contacts, get directions, send emails, write notes, search Google, view a maps, call businesses or establishments, set your alarm, and listen to music.
While you might think that most phones offers some type of voice command feature, the new Google Voice Actions for Android is quite unique. The application does not only utilizes data stored locally on a device. It also uses information indexed by Google. For instance, it will automatically call a business or establishment, even if you don’t have their number saved in your contacts book. The application will also play a song from any music streaming application such as Pandora or Last.fm when commanded to play a song not available in your local music library.
Unfortunately, Voice Actions is currently available in English for Android 2.2 [Froyo] only. The application is now available for download at www.google.com/mobile/voice-actions. To learn more about Google Voice Actions for Android
