With negotiations being lead by Google’s vice president of engineering, Andy Rubin, Google is planning to launch their very own music service by Christmas of this year, as many have speculated.
According to Reuters, the service — which many assume will be called ‘Google Music’ — will offer consumers a la carte music downloading, along with a feature dubbed ‘digital music locker’, which will allow users to listen to their downloaded tunes just about everywhere they go.
Music label executives are reportedly relieved that Google plans to enter the space. “Finally here’s an entity with the reach, resources and wherewithal to take on iTunes as a formidable competitor by tying it into search and Android mobile platform,” said one executive.
It only makes sense for Google to take this step. Apple’s super-popular iOS platform is complemented by their own music solution: iTunes.
Google has declined to comment on the matter, citing that the Mountain View-based company does not comment on rumor and speculation.
