The 3G issues on the Nexus One “superphone” became somewhat of a headache for Google and Nexus One owners. To date, there are still many customers complaining about such issues despite an OTA update released by Google back in February. It now appears that Mountain View-based Google has given up trying to find a solution to the issue. Google Employee Ry Guy announced a couple of days ago on the Nexus One Support Forums that the company is “no longer investigating further engineering improvements.”
Guy goes on to suggest affected Nexus One owners either change location or change the orientation of the phone. You see, the company highly believes that some are still affected due to spotty 3G coverage by their wireless carrier. However, the fact that Google is giving up on finding a solution to the problem suggests that the issue is hardware-related, something that no OTA update can fix.

Hey guys,
I’ve seen some recent speculation on this thread about an OTA to improve 3G connectivity and I want to give you an update on the situation.
While we are continuing to monitor user feedback regarding the 3G performance on the Nexus One, we are no longer investigating further engineering improvements at this time.
If you are still experiencing 3G issues, we recommend that you try changing your location or even the orientation of your phone, as this may help in areas with weaker coverage.
