A couple of weeks ago, ON&E reported that Twitter was planning to launch its very own native application for Android after Twitter CEO Evan William announced it at the Chirp Developer Conference. At the time, we were not quite sure whether the company would acquire an existing application, partnered up with another company, or create the client themselves from scratch. Turns out that they actually worked in partnership with the Android team to develop the first official Twitter application for Android. The information comes directly from the official Twitter Blog, which informs us that the application is now ready and available for download from the Android Market.
It appears that since the client is official and native, it takes advantage of the many services the Android platform offers. The application is completely integrated into the operating system for easy access from other core applications. For instance, users will be able to post tweets directly from many applications such as Gallery, simply by choosing Twitter from the “Share” menu. Additionally, users can see tweets directly from the QuickContact Bar, their phonebook, the home screen widget, Google talk, and even on Maps [tweets with location only]. Alas, the application is only available for Android 2.1, also known as Eclair.
Twitter states that they had a great time working with the Android team. The company along with Google will be open sourcing the code and a set of APIs in the future. The micro-blogging company is even looking to hire an Android engineer to join their team, most likely to help them develop future updates.
