Apple’s recently released the iOS 4.2 Gold Master software update, and there’s some great news: you need not be a developer to take full advantage of iOS 4.2. I’ve been using iOS 4.2 for a while now, and now it’s time you join in on the fun. Enjoy Apple’s definition of multitasking, folders, game center, and speed improvements.
Before we start, if you have a jailbroken device, you shouldn’t try this. You will absolutely lose your jailbreak.
It’s important to understand that you will need iTunes 10.1 beta to install iOS 4.2 on your device. You can obtain that by downloading the applicable file below:
– iTunes 10.1 Beta 2, Mac OS X – 68.05MB
– iTunes 10.1 Beta 2, Windows x86 – 70.9MB
– iTunes 10.1 Beta 2, Windows x64 – 71.81MB
Next, you’ll need the appropriate IPSW file for your device:
– iOS 4.2 GM (IPAD) – 549MB
– iOS 4.2 GM (IPHONE 4) – 624.27MB
– iOS 4.2 GM (IPHONE 3GS) – 401.3MB
– iOS 4.2 GM (IPHONE 3G) – 322.88MB
– iOS 4.2 GM (IPOD TOUCH 4G) – 608.65MB
– iOS 4.2 GM (IPOD TOUCH 3G) – 389.21MB
– iOS 4.2 GM (IPOD TOUCH 2G) – 346.74MB
Once you have the goods downloaded, head over to iTunes and back up your device. Not only does the backup protect you if you’ve lost all your settings, but it will also restore your settings once you install iOS 4.2, just before syncing happens.
Once you’re backed up, click “UPDATE” while holding Option on Mac computers or Shift on Windows computers to bring up the file browser. Select your newly-downloaded IPSW file.
BAM. That’s it. The process will take a few minutes, and you should be good to go after that. Once we get access to links, we’ll post them up.
