This week has definitely been all about Android 2.2 Froyo. Companies and wireless carriers have officially announced the specific dates when most of their devices will be upgraded to Android 2.2. Sprint informed yesterday that the official Android 2.2 update for the HTC EVO 4G would begin rolling out over-the-air [OTA] next week on August 3. However, the carrier did say that a manual version of the update would be made available for those impatient HTC EVO 4G owners.
To manually upgrade your HTC EVO 4G to Android 2.2, carefully follow the instructions in the full post.
- Download the update file from the HTC servers
- Rename the file to update.zip
- Move the file to the root directory in the SD card
- Reboot the device into recovery mode [hold “Up” button down while phone is turning on]
- A boot loader will appear.
- Navigate with your Up and Down buttons until you find “Bootloader”
- Select “Bootloader” with the power button
- Find and select “Recovery” [with the power button]
- The HTC EVO 4G will reboot into recovery mode
- Select “apply update.zip” or “install from .zip” [variation depends on recovery image]
That’s it! The installation should take somewhere between 15 to 20 minutes. The device will reboot itself a few more times. Proceed only if you know what you’re doing. Remember that Sprint will released the update OTA next week.
Let us know how the process goes.
Update: It appears that the link is not working. This might be due to a server overload, or worse, HTC killed it. We’ll keep monitoring the situation.
Update II: HTC has confirmed that this is not the final update. As a matter of fact, the company has recommended users not to install it. However, if you’re still feel brave enough, we’re pretty sure you can still find cached versions of the update on other websites. Proceed at your own risk.
