There was apparent hype over the release of the Skype 2.0 iPhone application, which just made its debut a little under a week ago and allows for calling over 3G — undoubtedly its most attractive feature.
It would turn out that the masses are truly interested in the application, as we’re learning that the app has been downloaded upwards of 5 million times since release. Unfortunately for users, the free Skype-to-Skype calling feature won’t be free forever.
“We’re not going to want to price ourselves out of the market. I can’t ignore the fact that consumers [currently] use us for free [on their desktops],” said Skype general manager for mobile Russ Shaw.
Still, we would expect many of those who downloaded the application to stay on-board even when Skype implements calling fees.
