Cupertino-based Apple announced today at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference [WWDC] 2010 that the next iteration of iPhone operating system is now called “iOS 4″ instead of “iPhone OS 4.” According to Apple, the new iOS 4 comes packed with more than 100 new features including Multitasking, Folders, Enhanced Mail, deeper Enterprise Support, and the new iAd mobile advertising platform, just as previously reported. The new platform also contains 1,500 APIs for developers.
The new iOS 4 will be made available on June 21 for the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the iPod Touch. The best part is that for the very first time in the history of the iPhone operating system, iOS 4 will be free to iPod Touch owners. However, do take into account that not all features will work equally or at all on all devices. For instance, the iPhone 3G will not support multitasking.
The company announced today at its keynote that while Google will not be replaced as the default search engine, Bing has now been integrated into the new iOS 4. Users can now choose Google, Yahoo, or Bing as their search engine. Apple expects to sell its 100 millionth iOS device [iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch] sometime this month, which will definitely be a huge milestone for the company.
It also appears that Cisco currently owns the “iOS” trademark. It will be interesting to see what the Apple legal team will do to get ownership of the trademark.
