According to new data released by online analytics service Hitwise, Facebook has surpassed Google in the U.S. in terms of popularity for the week ending on March 13th. Hitwise says that Facebook accounted for 7.07% of all U.S. visits, putting it in first pace. Google took second place with 7.03% of visits, while Yahoo Mail and Yahoo took third and fourth places with 3.8% and 3.67% respectively. It’s unknown why Yahoo Mail and Yahoo were not put together as one service, which would have actually taken first place if they were combined. YouTube took fifth place with 2.14%.
The February 2010 data from comScore puts Google as the number one site with 81% of the U.S. population. Facebook stays behind Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft sites with only 53%. Facebook previously reached the number one spot on Christmas Day 2009.
We’ll definitely be able to find out more when comScore releases its March 2010 data.
