James Cameron’s Avatar has turned out to be a record breaker for producers Fox Star Studios in India. The movie has broken the box office collections of Cameron’s previous money spinner – Titanic – in India.
Avatar has grossed Rs. 560 million (Rs 56 crore) in India in less than two weeks, and has thereby broken Titanic’s record as the highest grosser for 20th Century Fox in India.
Titanic released in India in 1997 and with a total collection of Rs 550 million (Rs 55 crore) was till date the biggest film for Fox in India. It was also one of the all time Top 3 Hollywood films in India along with Spiderman 3 and 2012.
The movie earned Rs 1 crore through its paid previews across India; the highest for any Hollywood film in India. It grossed Rs 6.7 crores on the opening day itself making it the biggest ever Friday opening for any Hollywood film in India.
Avatar then became the highest grosser among Hollywood films in India in terms of weekend collections of Rs 220 million (Rs 22 crore). The opening week collections in India were Rs 400 million (Rs 40 crore) in India.
Its weekend earning was the highest ever in the US. In North America the film has been the rage despite bad weathers. Fans have liked the James Cameron’s 3D film so much that they even braved snowfall and blizzard to throng at theatres where it is being shown.
The science fiction grossed nearly $300 million in the region. To achieve this target many films take months but Avatar only managed it over the Christmas weekend.
In its second weekend the film broke all previous US records for December. It earned $75 million.
Avatar has earned something around $212.3 million in the US and Canada. Its worldwide earning is humongous. Worldwide the movie has collected $620 million in 10 days with a cumulative drop of just 10% from last week.
