Google has introduced a new experimental app for Android to the Google Labs called Open Spot, which basically allows users to alert other individuals searching for a parking space when they leave a determined parking spot. All you have to do is open the application and tap the “Mark a spot” button when leaving or seeing a free parking spot. The application will show parking spaces available within a .9 mile radius.
As soon as a users marks an available parking spot, the application will place a dot on the location, which will change color as time goes by to indicate the chances of finding that specific spot. Recently marked spots will be red and turn orange after the first 5 minutes. Spots 10 minutes or older will become yellow. The spots will disappear after 20 minutes.
As an incentive, Google offers karma points to those who mark free parking spaces. Additionally, Google states that they have a couple of ways to deal with “griefers,” or individuals who purposely mark fake spots.
Google “Open Spot” App for Android Preview:
Overall, the application sound as it will definitely come handy in big metropolitan cities, where is always difficult to find a parking space on the street. Do take into account that spots will obviously not remain free for 20 minutes in busy cities, therefore the application can’t be really trusted after it turns yellow.
