By now, mostly everyone knows that that iPhone 4 has a reception issue due to the placement of its antenna, which fails to work when held with the left hand. The issue has quickly become known as the “Death Grip” on the Internet. Both Apple and its CEO Steve Jobs have inconveniently and rudely suggested iPhone 4 owners to avoid holding the device with the left hand, to grip it from its lower part — something that they themselves have done in their promotional material – or to purchase a rubber case to avoid direct contact with the metal strip that works as an antenna.
It appears now that the issue might be in part to a software bug, and Apple has shamelessly recognized it. The company is said to update iOS 4 to version 4.01 on Monday to try to resolve the Death Grip problem. Now, while this may or may not work for all affected iPhone 4 owners, it goes to show that the company has known all along that there was something wrong. Despite it, Apple lied and made several of its loyal customers spend an extra $29 on a rubber case, which probably wasn’t even necessary to begin with. Instead, the company could have just advised customers that it was aware of the issue and that an updated was going to be released next week.
At this point, we’ll just have to wait to see whether it’s true that Apple will release said update, and if it will work for at least the majority of affected users. We’ll report as soon as more information becomes available. Be sure to stay tuned.
