Twitter Co-Founder and CEO Evan Williams suggested yesterday at the Chirp Developer Conference that the company is planning to launch its own native Android application. The San Francisco-based microblogging service recently acquired Twitter client Tweetie for the iPhone, which is expected to be distributed by the company for free as its official iPhone application called “Twitter for iPhone.” Additionally, the company partnered up with Research In Motion to officially endorsed its Twitter application for BlackBerry.
At this point, details about the upcoming official Twitter app for Android remain unclear. It’s not known whether Twitter will acquire an existing application, like it did with Tweetie; or if the company is planning to make a new application from scratch. Also, the company could partner up with a developer or manufacturer, kind of like it did with RIM.
All these new announcements by Twitter are really putting much pressure on developers. Specially after Twitter Investor and Union Square Ventures Principal Fred Wilson told developers in a blog post to stop “filling holes” in the Twitter platform, and to instead focus on developing “killer apps” to create their own businesses.
Thus far, Twitter has launched and/ or announced official products that compete directly with Twitter developers. Some of these services include official apps for the BlackBerry, iPhone, and Android platforms; a URL shortener; and a new Points of Interest feature among others services.
